The post-WWII era of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s was a time of innovation in the United States. The automotive world was not exempt from this, as many of the “creature comforts” the motoring public has come to expect were developed and debuted during this time.
While many attribute what could be described as the country’s “hot rod culture” began in the late 1930’s when folks would race modified cars on the dry lakes of southern California, after World War II what was considered to be a fad spread to all parts of the country and began to take shape. While most people modified existing vehicles by removing items to lighten them, added high performance parts to the engine or replaced the engine with one of larger displacement and changed to tire and wheels which would provide better traction and handling, some took that a step further and built themselves a machine from the ground up.
A handful of people began manufacturing kits to accomplish this, often utilizing readily available chassis assemblies and used engines. This vehicle is a great example of that and was advertised in the hobbyist magazine Mechanix Illustrated. Based on a Model A Ford chassis, most people opted for the Ford flathead V8 for power.
From the information we can gather, a total of 12 kits were sold by this manufacturer. Of those 12 kits, it is believed that eight cars were actually built. Of those built, we think this car is the only one built that was not powered by a flathead Ford engine.
Acquired by the present owner in November 2010, this Mechanix Illustrated Special relies on a legendary Chrysler hemi V8 for power! After purchase, the car was treated to a complete restoration in the owner’s shop and is now offered for sale. A manual transmission allows the driver to row through the gears with the open cockpit allowing for a unique driving experience. This would be an excellent vehicle to show at local and regional events as well as tour events. The car has a clean and clear Missouri title. Due to statutes governing registered automobile dealers in Missouri, it is being sold “mileage exempt” due to age.
