The first-generation Ford Bronco was introduced to the motoring public for the 1966 model year, designed as a street-legal off-road vehicle intended to directly compete with American Motors’ Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester’s Scout. The Bronco was available is three body styles—two door wagon, half-cab pickup and an open roadster—with either the 170 cubic inch in-line six cylinder or a 289 cubic inch V8 backed by a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission and floor-shifted transfer case as engine choices. Later in the first-generation available engines changed to the 200 cubic inch six or 302 cubic inch V8 with a three-speed automatic transmission also added as an option. The half-cab pickup option was discontinued after the 1972 model year.
With sales beginning to drop, a new larger Bronco based on a shortened F150 platform was introduced for the 1978 model year. In recent years, the popularity of the first-generation Broncos has exploded and prices on good examples have increased with the demand. Ford’s introduction of the four door Expedition and Excursion SUVs in the late 1990’s meant the demise of the Bronco until recent years with the introduction of a new generation Bronco.
This 1970 Bronco sports the half-cab pickup body and would be at home in any garage or collection. The vehicle bears evidence of an older, amateur repaint in a two-tone red and white color scheme. The half-cab body appears to be solid with the rear wheel openings remaining uncut, something rare for these vehicles as many were trimmed to allow clearance for larger, wider tires. Power is sourced from a 1970’s era 351W engine, a factory engine option not available for this vehicle. The factory column-shifted three-speed manual transmission and floor-shifted transfer case remain, adding to the “old-school” appearance. The interior is rather spartan, with black bucket seats and padded dash. All-terrain raised white letter tires wrap aftermarket chrome wheels. The truck is equipped with power steering and what appears to be the original AM radio in the dash. In accordance with Missouri statutes, the Bronco will be sold “mileage-exempt” due to age.
