The relationship between Ford Motor Company and Carroll Shelby is, quite literally, the stuff that books are written and movies are made about. While that relationship started on the race tracks, it also translated to the streets with the first generation of Mustangs.
This 1968 Shelby GT500 convertible is an exceptional example of that. One of 402 Shelby GT500 convertibles built in the 1968 model year, the trim tag on this vehicle shows it to have been restored to the correct Sunlit Gold Metallic paint with the Medium Saddle crinkle vinyl and Saddle Kiwi vinyl interior. Power comes from a Shelby-prepared 428 cubic inch powerplant, with a C6 three-speed automatic transmission delivering power to the nine-inch Ford rear differential housing a 3.50:1 gearset. The correct Shelby wheels can be found at all four corners and for the full-size spare secured in the trunk.
An interesting side note is that the trim tag indicates the car was built on February 29, 1968 making it a rare Leap Day car! In addition, the glove box door has been autographed by Carroll Shelby, adding additional provenance to this impressive car. This GT500 has been a part of the present owner’s classic vehicle portfolio since February 2008 and has been driven occasionally during his ownership. It has been stored in a humidity-controlled environment since his acquisition.
While we believe the odometer mileage of slightly over 79,000 miles to be correct, in accordance with statutes regulating licensed automobile dealers in the State of Missouri, the car will be sold “mileage exempt” due to age. The car has a clean and clear Missouri title.
